Harbor breeze ceiling fan remote control not working

I had a remote controlled Harbor Breeze fan that had the same symptoms. The fan is not "natively" remote controlled. The remote functionality is provided via a separate receiver unit which is hidden in the fan housing near the ceiling and is wired to the fan. I replaced the receiver, which restored the remote functionality.
