Creating echoes of yourself from alternate realities seems like the kind of thing a Horizon Walker would do. The Echo Knight is packed with value, so I can’t sum it up here, but it’s worth a look if it’s allowed. I would say take the first 5 levels ranger. Then take either two levels of druid or three of rogue. Scout and assassin would work well for your concept. I would say wield a longsword and shield, or a greatsword/axe as the horizon walker is about one powerful attack. The Ranger subclasses are: Hunter, Variant Beast Master, Gloom Stalker, Horizon Walker, Monster Slayer, Fey Wanderer, Swarm Keeper, and Drake Warden. Mechanically, I'd say my ranking is: S- Gloom Stalker. A- Horizon Walker, Fey Wanderer. B- Monster Slayer, Variant Beast Master, Drake Warden, Swarm Keeper. C- Hunter.Horizon walker, Dueling fighting style, using a hand weapon and shield. There are so many things a ranger can do with their bonus action so I would not go for dual wield. For an animal you could grab Magic Initiate for the Find Familiar spell, and maybe grap Booming Blade cantrip as well for another melee option.

The expanded spell list is what really interests me about the horizon walker. Any ranger list that lets you try something other than hunters mark (ie haste) is a god send, and teleportation circle gives you a break from survival based travel. Personally, I'd probably build a melee focused ranger. Dueling fighting style for damage, spells such as Zephyr Strike and Ensnaring Strike, and at level 4 get Elven Accuracy. With Zephyr and Ensnaring Strike you can easily proc Elven Accuracy so you can effectively crit fish. Currently a level 8 horizon walker.
