It is currently kept in the Neue Galerie in New York. The painting was commissioned in 1903, the same year the master traveled to Ravenna. However, Klimt needed four years in total to complete the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer (1881–1925), the eccentric wife of industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer.

Efforts to reclaim the Bloch-Bauer fortune were unsuccessful until the 1998 Art Restitution Law was enacted in Austria. After years of legal disputes, an Austrian arbitration panel ruled in favor of the Bloch-Bauer heirs in January 2006. Klimt’s "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" was then acquired by the Neue Galerie New York. But Klimt was notoriously slow in completing his portraits and it became clear that the intended gift would not be completed in time. He began work on the painting in 1903. The artwork Adele Bloch-Bauer II (1912–13) is back in Vienna to undergo scientific analysis and restoration in the Belvedere’s workshops.
